ABOUT CHARTER FILMS

In 1938, twin brothers, John and Roy Boulting set up Charter Films Limited. Throughout the following 40 years they produced in excess of 50 films in the UK, utilising the best of home- grown British talent. During these fruitful years, with the likes of “Brighton Rock” and “I’m Alright Jack”, they launched the careers of many subsequent luminaries of the British screen both in front and behind the camera. Both Peter Sellers and Richard (now Lord) Attenborough made their most important screen debuts in Boulting Brothers’ productions as did many others who went on to enjoy long and illustrious careers both in the UK and in Hollywood.

Having worked in the industry myself for the past 15 years and being the grandson of John Boulting it has long been my ambition to re-capture some of the excitement of those early days and re-kindle the “Family Business”. With this in mind in 2006, nearly 70 years after it’s initial inception, I had the pleasure of re-incorporating Charter Films Limited with the same goal of finding and nurturing talent in every avenue of the film making business.

It goes without saying that today’s Charter Films exists in a markedly different world than that of it’s predecessor and the challenges that face today’s film makers in getting the product to the audience are both immense and daunting but at the same time there are so many exciting advances in the industry that make it such a vibrant and fluid business to work in that I believe that it is my job as CEO of Charter Films Limited to find the niche that we can comfortably and productively fit into.

When John and Roy Boulting started making movies, they found this place for themselves by producing pictures with a social message. Times have changed, but I believe that today’s Charter Films also has a social remit. This is to make movies that can be enjoyed by all, family orientated movies that will appeal to the broadest audience without the need for some of the trademarks of current film making

I believe that there is a place for quality crafted works that, through their inherent concept and realisation, can endure and find a place within the hearts and minds of the movie-going public for many years to come. One only has to look at any list of top 100 films of all time to see the predominance of films from years gone by to understand the basic need for great stories well told.

It now remains for us to find those great stories, match them with the perfect talent to tell them in the best possible way and bring them to the world stage where British Film should so definitely belong.
